MICRO ROLLER FOR HAIR LOSS

Also described as a dermaroller, microneedling with a micro roller is an innovative therapy that has a wide range of aesthetic applications and is becoming increasingly popular as a treatment to encourage hair regrowth.

The micro roller has been used for some years as an aesthetic treatment to reduce the appearance of scars and reverse the signs of ageing. As we age, components in the dermis such as collagen and elastin that provide the structure and elasticity in youthful skin, start to deplete and this can be made worse by environmental and lifestyle factors, such as pollution, stress, bad diet or smoking.

A dermaroller is a device covered with very fine needles that is run over the skin, causing tiny micro-injuries in the dermis. This triggers the body’s natural healing process and collagen and elastin production is stimulated to repair the damage.

Recently, its use as a hair regrowth therapy has been explored and there’s evidence it can help with hereditary hair loss or androgenetic alopecia. When the device is run over the scalp, micro-injuries are made into the middle layer of dermis, promoting collagen production and also stimulating the hair follicles. This can result in the thickening of thinning hair and even producing new hair growth. Microneedling can also promote the absorption of topical hair regrowth products such as minoxidil.

GET IN TOUCH

At Hair Loss for Women, our female hair loss expert will advise you on the appropriate treatment plan for micro roller. This can be performed in-clinic, in combination with Low Level Laser Therapy and utilising our specially formulated Hair Growth products. Typically, we advise you to have one in-clinic treatment session per week for a minimum of three months, but ideally for six months for optimal results.

There is usually redness and swelling in the areas treated and there may be some skin irritation or oozing from the wounds, but any side effects should quickly be resolved. There are some contraindications; microneedling isn’t suitable if you have eczema or open wounds in the treatment area or are on blood thinners or other similar medication. You will be advised to protect the scalp from sun exposure as you may be more sensitive after treatment.

Alternatively, we can supply you with an at-home microneedling device and products. You will then attend a monthly check-up to monitor your progress.
