female hair lossSex in the City star, Kristen Davis recently disclosed to Women’s Wear Daily that she was losing her hair.  The glamorous actress explained that she’d always had difficult hair that required professional stylists to create the “Charlotte” look but at least it was possible because she had the volume.  The 52 year old explained how things had changed, “My hair just was not what it used to be.  It was very fine, like it had gone away, there just was hardly any hair there.”

Female hair loss – surprisingly common

Although hair loss is normal regarded as the exclusive preserve of males it’s surprisingly common in women too.  By the age of 65 at least half of all women will have some form of hair loss.  Hormonal changes, such has having a baby, the menopause or even the stresses of modern living can all have a detrimental effect on the hair.

Cleaning and styling can also cause a surprising amount of damage to hair too.  Traction alopecia can be caused by extensions or over vigorous towel trying whilst heat and chemicals such as dyes can also cause permanent damage.

Normal to shed up to 100 hairs per day

It’s actually quite normal to shed up to about 100 hairs per day so in most cases there’s no need to panic but if you’re regularly losing more than that and you suspect that you may be prone to hair loss because of your age or hormonal changes then it’s definitely worth seeking out some professional advice. Depending on the cause and progress of the condition there are a number of ways to tackle it and a hair loss clinic will be able to advise on the best course of action for you.

In Kristen’s case she went to her stylist, Luke O’Connor who recommended a range of voluminising products which clearly did the trick for her as she has recently been appointed their global ambassador.
