Beautifully Insecure, a new film set to release later this year, will focus on the story of a young woman who suffers from the hair loss condition alopecia. The story also has a moral meaning and speaks to the audience about being able to accept not just others, but also yourself by conquering your own insecurities.
The story talks about the main character, Leanna, who had stated to lose her hair from just nine years old. She hid her hair loss from her friends, and even in her early twenties, has not revealed her secret to anyone. Eventually she meets someone who she feels is her soul mate and decides that she needs to admit the truth about her condition, yet Leanna’s insecurities and self-esteem make this extremely difficult for her.
What is alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is a chronic, inflammatory disease which causes patients to lose some or all of their hair. The condition itself is not life-threatening or painful even, however patients will nearly always suffer from psychological consequences. Psychological effects such as anxiety, depression and high levels of emotional stress can all lead to further secondary medical conditions.
How can Beautifully Insecure raise awareness?
A movie such as Beautifully Insecure is an excellent way of raising awareness amongst the common public about conditions such as alopecia. This movie acts as a way to raise mindfulness amongst the audience that alopecia can cause psychological symptoms as well as the obvious hair loss in patients, all while delivering the moral that we should first and foremost accept ourselves as we are.
This movie is also a positive way for alopecia and hair loss patients to share their stories with others without having to feel apprehensive or judged. Beautifully Insecure is a stepping stone into cinema which normalises such health conditions and allows sufferers to feel more accepted and confident within themselves.
